Saint Luis Rey Regios — tasting notes and pricing context
Saint Luis Rey was founded in 1940 by two American expatriates and named after the central character in Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer-winning novel 'The Bridge of San Luis Rey'. The brand is rolled at the Romeo y Julieta factory but uses a fuller, more pepper-forward blend than Romeo's standard line — closer in character to a Partagás than to Romeo. The Regios is the brand's flagship robusto at 4.9 inches by 50 ring, and for most of the 20th century was an under-the-radar favourite of British aficionados.
The smoke is unmistakably full-bodied. First third opens with black pepper, dark earth and a touch of espresso; the middle settles into leather, coffee and aged cedar; the last third delivers a long, dense finish with cocoa and a whisper of dried fruit. Smoking time runs 60 to 75 minutes. A box of 25 sits in the €435 to €530 range: Noblego runs around €455, UK retailers post equivalent of €495 to €520, Cigarmust CHF 505 (~€530).
